TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Co. (CHT) will join High Tech Computer Corp. (2498.TW) and Google Inc. (GOOG) in developing a mobile phone that will run on a new open-standards mobile software platform, the Economic Daily News reported Thursday, citing Chunghwa Chairman Ho Chen Tan.
Ho Chen said Chunghwa Telecom aims to be the first phone company to launch a handset using the new mobile platform, called Android, the Chinese-language newspaper reported.
Taipei-based Chunghwa Telecom is Taiwan's largest phone company by revenue and subscribers. HTC is the world's largest maker of phones using Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) operating system by shipments.
